Online Individual Sessions
If you decide to register for one session and take it online, you will be able to access the online materials approximately two weeks after the in-person date shown below. Materials include an audio presentation link of each module in the sessions, PDFs of presentations, tip sheets and biographies of presenters.
CE credits for online sessions and credits towards your Associate designation are available for download once you complete and pass a quiz for each module in the session. Each session is eligible for 3.5 CE credits, 35 for those who complete the Associate program and who will also receive the BPHA designation.

Dates, Sessions and Registration
1. The Benefits Landscape
This session has a program introduction and four modules. Modules in this session present an overview of the program, the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association, other industry stakeholders and the industry landscape. At the end of this session you will have a baseline knowledge of the employee benefits sector and an overview of some of today’s current issues.
2. Funding Arrangements, Pooling and Flexible Benefits
This session has three modules. Modules in this session deliver an understanding of the funding and underwriting arrangements in the marketplace, pooling in today’s environment and flexible benefits for small and large groups. At the end of this session you will have a sound understanding of current practices and challenges for each.
3. Renewals and Marketing
This session has three modules. Modules in this session provide details of renewal analysis and forecasting, how to develop marketing specifications and how to analyze proposals and present the results to clients. At the end of this session you will have a good understanding of the renewal process, how to market a plan and how to present a renewal.
4. Communications, The Law and Fraud
This session has three modules. Modules in this session provide insight on the important role of communications in plan design, management and governance, the legal responsibilities of benefits and human resource management, and the extent of fraud in employee benefits and anti fraud initiatives. At the end of this session you will have a good understanding of effective communication strategies, legal obligations and how to prevent and manage fraud.
5. Pooled, Voluntary Benefits, Group Travel and Individual Health Plans
This session has three modules. Modules in this session provide an understanding of pooled benefits including mandatory and voluntary group life, accidental death and dismemberment, critical illness and other voluntary benefits that can be offered to plan members. At the end of this session you will have a better understanding of the role of pooled and voluntary benefits and the advantages to plan members when they have access to supplementary coverage at affordable group prices.
6. Dental, Extended Health, Networks, Analytics, and Government Health Benefits
This session has four modules. Modules in this session address dental and health benefits, fully insured and self funded, and the associated complexities around them, including covered services, trends and affordability issues, data analytics for these benefits, and additional government health benefits available when group coverage is limited or not available. The session also includes an overview of the most common but often misunderstood pharmacy services and arrangements that impact plan sponsors and their plan members. At the end of this session you will understand the challenges in managing dental and health plans, the important role pharmacy and data analytics can play in plan management, and to what extent government programs can be a viable option.
7. The Pharmaceutical Industry, Reimbursement and Public- Private Sustainability
This session has five modules. One of our most popular sessions last season, modules in this session dig deeper into the important pharmaceutical issues of today. You will learn about the process of prescription drug development, market launch and patent protection, how specialty drugs have changed the reimbursement landscape, the complexities of brand and generic and the impact of changes in drug pricing on access. Instructors will also address drug plan formulary management and how electronic claims adjudication has changed the way drug benefits are managed. Finally, you will explore the affordability in the public and private sector world of prescription drugs. At the end of this session you will know much more than the average benefits professional about prescription drug development, pricing, reimbursement and affordability issues and you will understand to what extent public drug programs can be a viable option in the future.
8. Prevention, Wellness, Pharmacy and Chronic Disease Management
Available online April 30, 2019 (in person April 16, 2019).
This session has four modules. Modules in this session address the important role of prevention and wellness (wellbeing) as well as chronic disease management in managing plan member health and employee benefit plan design and budgets. We will also address the expanding role of pharmacists in delivering chronic disease management to plan members and finally we will connect the dots to discuss the overall impact on benefit plans when plan members, plan sponsors and providers work together to improve member wellbeing. At the end of this session you will understand some of the key steps to plan member wellbeing, including starting an effective and measurable wellness program, and the importance of exploring the expanding number of tools and providers to achieve member health goals in plan design, including pharmacy.
9. Absence, Disability, Disability Management and Government Benefits
Available online June 11, 2019 (in person May 28, 2019).
This session has three modules. Modules in this session will address the philosophy of absence and disability management, the process of an absence through to becoming a disability, claim initiation, the importance of early and ongoing communication and timely access to medical care, best practice management from an insurer and external consultant perspective, return to work and record keeping. Presenters will also address government benefits; occupational and non-occupation and some of the challenges that are presented under a dual system. At the end of this session you will learn some of the most important aspects of absence and disability management that will allow you to respond appropriately and ask the right questions when you and/or your clients or your plan members are faced with an absence.
10. Innovations and New Horizons in Benefits
Available online July 2, 2019 (in person June 18, 2019).
This session has four modules. One of our most popular sessions last season, modules in this session address the creative plan solutions that are emerging in the marketplace for small, medium and large groups, the disruptors to the employee benefits landscape that are pushing towards fundamental changes that will affect all stakeholders, and the impact of technology. Finally, we will take a forward look into the future of medicines and treatments that are on the horizon. At the end of this session you will understand the individual group level and larger market forces that are promising to change the benefits landscape for all stakeholders involved.
Full refunds and credits are accepted with at least 48 hours notice. Cancellations within 48 hours of an event are refunded at 50%.
